About Faculty

The Faculty of Screen Arts carries out educational programmes of Higher Professional Education to train Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees specialists.

The Faculty itself is quite young. Actually 20 years ago cinematographers-to-be studied at one of the oldest University of St. Petersburg which was famous in Soviet Union time as Leningrad Institute of Motion-Pictures Engineers (LIKI). It was 1990 when the LENFILM Studio took its first steps to set up a Creative Faculty. The founders of the faculty realized that the programme purposes were to provide students with professional Cinematography education because the filming process required Directors, Scriptwriters, Cameramen, Sound Engineers, Film Experts and Film Editors. Therefore it was established a complete set of special Cinematography and Television subjects to study.

Now the Faculty of Screen Arts stands firmly on the ground. There are over 700 students of all forms of study engaged into educational process. During the entrance examinations period Masters watch thoroughly applicants’ creative works which show their inner world and motivation to study at the University, as these applicants become true artists in future.

The Faculty cooperates with prominent workers in Cinematography and Television, experienced practitioners and theorists,  who are involved in the educational process to communicate their knowledge and professional skills to students.

The University students study at the educational art workshops headed leading experts of Cinematography and Television. There are famous workers of Art among them: Film Directors – S.M. Ovcharov, K.C. Lopushansky, S.O. Snezhkin, V.F. Semenyuk, V.I. Buturlin, V.E. Aksenov, Scriptwriters - Yu.N. Klepikov, I.V. Ageev, TV Director - A.P. Krivonos, TV Journalist - V.V. Mukusev, Cameramen - D.A. Dolinin, S.M. Lando, C.V. Astakhov, Sound Engineers - U.A. Kubitsky, A.A. Gasan-Zade, Film Critics - O.A.Kovalov, A.A.Artukh.

All students have their practical training in the following film studios: the Lenfilm Studio, the Lennauchfilm Studio, the St.Petersburg’s Studio of Documentary, the World Russian Studios, the Vek Studio, Producer Centres, Editorial Offices of magazines and newspapers, TV and Radio Broadcasting Studios.

Students of the Faculty participate annually and get awards in numerous Russian regional and International film festivals, and it becomes one of the essential criteria in training process of specialist-to-be in Cinematography and Television areas. They were awarded at the Film festivals like the Kinotavr, the Message to Man, The beginning, the Festival of Festivals, the Golden Vityaz (Knight), the Saint Anna and many others. Every year the University holds its own Piterkit Film Festival where students represent their best works.

The University has close relationships with famous European film schools of Great Britain, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland and France. Students of the Faculty participate actively in the international projects. Purpose of these projects is to establish international shooting groups to make films together within two weeks. And students have very good opportunities to share their experience and get new one, to work in  extreme circumstances. They borrow new ideas from foreign tutors, practice new skills in Cinematography, find new ways of thinking and film language.

Students film their works at the Educational Film and Video Centre during their study.

The filming process forces students to organize artistic crews that continue working successfully afterwards. Also students make their yearly works and diploma works here. The Educational Film and Video Centre possesses its own film studio stages and facilities, and it produces over 100 of students’ films a year.
