The Cinematographer specialist develops visual film or TV solutions and can manage camera crew. As he is responsible for the image quality, he should learn capabilities of modern filming equipment, illuminating and optical devices, and digital image processing systems.

Graduates are ready to perform creative and production activity in Fiction, Documentary, Science-Fiction Cinematography, to do all types of filming for TV studios such as video films, commercials, TV news, documentary sketches, featured broadcasting, etc.

The Cinematographer and TV Cameraman are very similar specializations but there is a clear-cut distinction. TV Cameraman, in particular, should be able to take multicamera filming of TV programme in a television format, whereas Cinematographer, while shooting a film, has to think of all ways of image processing which is not applicable to Television area.

Students have their training at the Camerawork Art Department headed by Nikolay Volkov, a famous Cinematographer and Honored Art Worker of RF. And other distinguishing people contribute to development of the Department like Dmitry Dolinin, Honored Art Worker of RSFSR and Laureate of the State Prize of USSR, and Sergey Astakhov, Two-time Laureate of the State Prize of RF.

The best masters of National Cinematography and Television are involved into educational process at the Department, and it ensures the high level of knowledge in Cinematography area.

Students of the Camerawork Art Department are regular prize-winners for the best camerawork activity, including prizes at the Venice Film Festival, the NIKA Award and the Golden Eagle Award.
