12 December 2020

On December 9-11, 2020, the XII International Conference of Young Japanologists New Look was arranged. The conference is organised every year in cooperation between the Department of the Japanese Culture Japan Foundation (Japanese Foundation in the Russian Federation), the Association of Japanologists and the School of Asian Studies of HSE University.

Yana Kourbanova, the 2nd year student of ‘Film and TV Producing’ represented the St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television. Yana’s report about ‘Amabie in the Japanese culture and its growing popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic’. Anna Oskina, a senior Lecturer of the Department of Foreign Languages of St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television, supervised Yana’s work.

Yana shared her impressions about the Conference:

I have been interested in Japanese culture for a long time, I attend Japanese Language classes in our University, and so I was eager to take part at the Conference. This is my first scientific conference and I was happy to hear the advice and recommendations not only from my professors but also from the organisers of the Conference. I think I will research this topic further and I will submit the application for the conference next year.

As far as I understood, this is the first time the event was organised online, but the organisers managed to realise the work brilliantly. I liked the attitude of the moderator to the participants, I felt support.
