VII International festival of student works by sound engineers "INTONATIONS"

About the festival
"Unsolved sounds... had power over me". Igor Severyanin

The idea for the birth of our festival was the long-term reflection that at all famous film festivals, the work of a sound engineer is evaluated in a single category, and we considered it not fair! The work of a sound engineer is multifaceted, multi-faceted and includes a huge number of creative and technical tasks that need to be solved and implemented. Thus, the competition program of our festival was born, which allowed us to evaluate the work of students of sound engineers in different categories.

Our first festival lasted only one day, we gathered in a small cinema hall of the Loft "Floors" on Ligovka and in the presence of a real professional Jury held the Festival "Intonation" – The first Festival of sound engineering works of students of the Department of Sound Engineering of the Faculty of Screen Arts of the Institute of Film and Television!

The organizers, teachers of the Department of Sound Engineering, the jury, students and guests all liked it very much!
For the first time, someone (in addition to the masters), took seriously the work that future sound engineers did, was able to appreciate the nascent creative handwriting and the slightest shades of intonation of the sound scale. There was an opportunity to see the work of their colleagues from other workshops in a much larger number.

For the first time, the children found themselves in a healthy creative and professional competition!

And now, the festival has become an expected annual event in the lives of our students and, as it turned out, not only ours! The program of the festival was attended by students of VGIK, the Kazakh National Academy of Arts, works from Vietnam, Mongolia and France. Moreover, the number of people willing to participate exceeds the physically permissible time of competitive viewing, and the organizing committee of the festival has to conduct a serious selection of films.

During the development of the Intonation festival, it has become a tradition to invite applicants, graduates and colleagues to the Festival with the most interesting master classes.

We sincerely believe that the festival will grow and develop, and will become a worthy "platform" for the exchange of experience, communication and inspiration for creative intonations.

April 07

Over the past three years, representatives of the Sennheiser company have been guests of honor and patrons of the "Intonation"festival. Every year, the company establishes a special prize to support the contestants. Our festival is a unique platform for the start and development of specialists in the field of sound and, according to our information, has no analogues in the world. For us, the participation of the Sennheiser company and the introduction of students to your company's products at the training stage is especially valuable and important, because after becoming specialists, "yesterday's" students will continue to work with high-quality equipment, the advantages of which they have well studied and were able to appreciate.

April 21

19 April, 2021, the VII International Contest-Festival of Sound Designers InTONATION started. The event takes place at the St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television, and it brings together students of sound design from all over the world for the seventh time. This year the Organizers of the Festival have prepared a rich program: competitive shows, workshops of leading industry professionals, round table discussions with jury members, and other activities.

In 2020 we had to go into lockdown just a few weeks before the Festival and canceled all cultural events. Now we are gradually coming back to an accustomed life. And the Organizers have announced the start of the VII International Contest-Festival of Sound Designers InTONATION, with all the recommended hygienic rules to follow.

Oksana Anatoliyevna Laricheva, Vice-rector for Artistic and Creative Work and Extracurricular Activities, opened the Festival and wished the participants good luck and thanked the Sound Engineering  Department  for the initiative and the desire to develop the Contest:

- I wish all the participants good luck! Let you get professional pleasure from communication, learn experience from masters, speakers, and, of course, each other. I would like to thank the Sound Engineering Department for your initiative and zeal to develop this wonderful Contest and fill the students with professional knowledge! I will be listening to you with great pleasure throughout the whole festival!

Olga Alexandrovna Chesnova, Dean of the Faculty of Screen Arts, welcomed the participants, jury members and viewers and noted that everyone has an opportunity to be a part of the Festival:

- You have a unique opportunity to be not just a spectator but a participant in the Festival as well. Attend workshops, watch movies, vote for your favorite film, participate in discussions - it's all part of the learning process. Please, appreciate it and learn from it!

The geography of the Festival continues to grow. This year's submissions came from the Czech Republic, Lithuania, France, USA, Kazakhstan, and other countries.

The participants will compete in the following categories:
Best Sound Design in a Fiction Feature Film.
Best Sound Design in a Non-fiction Film.
Best Sound Design in an Animated Film.
Best Debut.
The participants will compete for the special prizes as well.

The world's leading manufacturer of sound equipment Sennheiser has been supporting us for the last few years. And its representative traditionally gives us a special prize from the company.

The biggest surprise of the Festival is the prize established by the Atmosphere Studio and its representative Pavel Doreuli. The contestant awarded with this prize will receive a certificate which entitles them to do their next work in the Atmosphere  Studio in twenty shifts: 10 editing shifts (using phono library), 2 shifts in voiceover studio, 2 shifts in synchronous noise recording studio, 4 shifts for creating premixes, and 2 shifts for Dolby Premier dubbing, and also it includes the opportunity to discuss audio solutions and mixes with Pavel Doreuli and the studio staff members.

Anton Victorovich Smirnov, Head of the Sound Engineering Department, emphasized that this unfailing love for the sound is transmitted along with the knowledge that the student draws from his master:

- Our Department relies heavily on tradition and history while continuing organizing the Festival. Every teacher strives to pass on to their students not only knowledge but a piece of themselves as well. Unfortunately, the Department has lost two outstanding masters: Elena Vladimirovna Sladkovskaya and Aliakper Hasan-Zadeh. It is impossible to estimate their contribution to sound design as a whole and to each of their students individually. That is why the Organizers have established two prizes in honor of their memory, which I am sure the jury members will give to the most worthy works!

Alexandr Sokurov, a Soviet and Russian Film Director and Screenwriter, Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation, People's Artist of Russia, came to congratulate and greet the participants and organizers of the Contest. The master noted the necessity of such festivals and thanked the Department for creating a platform for the exchange of experience and knowledge.

The opening ceremony ended with the screening of Irina Evteeva's film Melody of a String Tree. The Sound Designer of the film was Vladimir Persov, Professor of Sound Engineering Department of SPbGIKiT, Honored Worker of Arts of the Russian Federation.

The story of Poet Khlebnikov's travels, on the one hand, tells us how the Pharaoh Akhnaten gives his protagonist, Poet, his Ka (it is the embodiment of life force in Egyptian mythology), and, on the other  hand, about the love of Layla and Medlum, characters of the namesake poem by Khlebnikov.

There are lots of interesting things to see. Come, take part, and  vote! The InTONATION sounds for everyone!
