The Acoustics of Entertainment Enterprises and Studios, Electro Acoustics Programme

Acoustics is a wide area of knowledge dedicated to mechanical oscillations study in different environments. The Acoustics Department explores audible oscillations. These are music and speech, birds singing and car roar, waterfall noise and leaves rustle, and conversation or noise of neighbors next door. All these are audible sounds that make our life beautiful or complicated. Sound radiation and receiving, sound application or clearing are that issues which are solved at the Acoustics Department.

The following disciplines which students study at the Department show a wide range of acoustic issues: Theoretical and Physical Basis of Acoustics, Auditory Psychophysics, Electro Acoustic Equipment, Architectural Acoustics, Musical Acoustics, Acoustical Signal Processing Systems, Room Sound Equipment and Systems, Acoustic Measurements, Oscillation and Noises, etc.


Students gain professional knowledge and skills in the following areas:

Electro Acoustic Equipment Design; • Public-address Amplifier Design; • Sound Engineer Equipment; • Room Acoustic Treatment and Correction (Acoustic Absorption, Vibro- and Sound Insulation); • Analog and Digital Processing of Acoustic Signals; • Acoustic Measurements; • Working with the Program Software for Acoustic Design (EASE ODEON, etc.)

Students are involved actively for the scientific and applied works implementation (including work on a commercial basis). Among the recent projects of the Department are the acoustic design of the rehearsal hall in the Mikhailovsky Theatre, Capella, acoustic equipment installation of the second stage in the Maryinsky Theatre, acoustic treatment of the Aquarium Band rehearsal studio, various studios design, audition rooms and so on.

Graduates work at:

- public and private project companies (the Krylov State Research Center, the Morphyspribor Research Institute, the Rubin Central Design Bureau, the ACOUSTIC GROUP, etc.);

- electro-acoustic equipment and microphones production (the Microphone-SPb) and loudspeakers (the Akton, the SBN, the Meta);

The Sound Technologies of Film and Television Programme

Sound Technologies is a sphere where engineering and creativity are combined.

Workers of the Sound Engineering Department participated in the establishment and development of sound films, and fulfilled researches of sound recording and playback principles in films.


Contemporary living conditions make us use actively the technologies of interactive communication. The image in movies and television gives the opportunity to experience the beauty and uniqueness of events. BUT! How much stronger our sensations are, if they are accompanied by the right sounding! Heart beats faster, eyes are in tears... We could hate all of it, if the sound is distorted, and  the film was dubbed by people who are far from understanding the essence of sound quality! But how pleased we are, if the sound reveals tenderly all the subtleties of the film.

Graduates of the Sound Engineering Department cover the whole range of activities from work in live air in TV and Radio companies up to the highly professional work in dubbing studio rooms.

Technically competent experts of the Sound Technology in Film and Enterprises Program work  not only in the country but also abroad, carrying out functions of sound engineers, sound operators, and sound producers.

They gain knowledge that gives an opportunity of professional activities and ability to organize their own image editing and film dubbing studio.

The laboratory base of the Sound Engineering Department has acoustic technical equipment units close to real conditions for direct recording, editing and rerecording of professional audiovisual programmes. Technical devices and content of training programs are improved constantly. To give assistance to students the Department uses interactive consulting technology to perform academic tasks as well as to deal with issues of professional training. Leading experts of movie and television enterprises of St. Petersburg are involved in teaching process, as they graduated themselves in different years from the Sound Engineering Department.

The Stage and Studio Sound Programme

The world we live in is filled with sounds. We are too sensitive to them late at night when sounds fade away, no engines noise of automobiles, nor bits of conversations of passers-by and sound of slamming doors. And you want to listen to a gentle sounding of favorite musical work or powerful sound tracks of heavy rock... You can do it. But if the sound produces rattling noise and the atmosphere of surround and overwhelming sound is broken, we turn off the source of irritating noise.

To have better sound specialists of the Stage and Studio Sound Programme in the Sound Engineering Department should perform their work very well.

Graduates work successfully in the music recording studios, theaters, concert venues, they take part in the opera performance projects in open spaces, city festivals,  and work with music bands in concert halls of the city and on tours.

Graduates, studying technological tendencies of the analog, digital and MIDI sound at the Department, gain knowledge to work professionally and they are sure to organize their own studio of sound recording and arrangement for musical programmes, and to start their own business.

The laboratory base of the Sound Engineering Department has acoustic technical equipment units close to real conditions for recording music programmes in various conditions. We keep relationships with former graduates of different years and leading experts in the live sound and music programmes recording areas, so we can run classes for students as in the laboratory of the Department, as at relating enterprises in St. Petersburg.

The main purpose of  the Sound Engineering Department is to give knowledge of sound understanding to find optimal technological conditions for its recording and playback in studios and concert halls.

The Screen Shows and Film Enterprises Technologies Programme

Properties of a modern cinema are digital technologies allowing to receive stereo images with stereo sound of a high quality. Present-day experts  in the Screen Shows and Film Enterprises Technologies is a professional in the Computer Technology  area to demonstrate stereo movies with stereo sound in traditional theatres and entertainment areas as well.


The disciplines of the Shows and Film Enterprises Technologies Programme gives  you training in the film show technology of entertaining movie pictures, and featured and animated films. Studying the technologies you learn equipment for a film show. Knowing the digital technology and digital equipment, you can learn computer design methods.

The Technical Devices of Film and Television Programme

Cinematography and Television areas include not only producers, directors, actors, cameramen and other representatives of creative professions. It is  also equipment which is necessary for creative process realization of producing movie products. Let us to remind you that Cinematography began with the invention of various devices by  a great number of talented people. There were Edison, Timchenko, Demeny, Lumière brothers among them and many others. Television started  when B.L. Rozing intented cathode-ray  tube and  V.K. Zvorikin invented iconoscope .

At the Electrical Engineering and Technical Electronics Department you can be a participant of a fascinating process and learn the inner part of technical devices, their work, how they are designed, how they are made. You would get a profession of an Engineering which has been  and is  still in demand.


Cinematography and Television are the activities where it is possible to combine creative and technical areas. Disciplines at the Department provide the technical component of the learning process.

The name of our Department says that we are engaged in electronic and technical devices which function is implemented by converting the input and output signals in accordance with the laid down algorithm of signal processing. Department’s specialization in the field of technical devices means that our graduates obtain qualification which enables them to carry out all design diversity stages of the electronic devices used in Cinematography and Television.

Modern technology is based on using digital devices and, first of all, microprocessors, microcontrollers and signal processors. Design stages are analysis and formalization of device functions; the choice of  hardware components, development of an electrical schematic, development of PC-board  and, finally, the embodiment of the device target function by composition and debugging of the software of the embedded microcontroller or signal processor.

Necessary condition of successful development of electronic devices is knowledge of signal interfaces used in Cinematography and Television. PCM and MIDI are for audio signals, CAN and USB - for control signal of electric drive, DMX is to control signals of concert light equipment. All these terms would be explained to students during lectures, seminars and laboratory classes.

Essential part of the educational programme is the study of theory and practice of technical devices operation and control within the single technological complex - that is so called the technological processes automation.

Graduates obtain the qualification and they could deal with automation systems for cinema and TV studios as well as for multimedia audiovisual facilities integrated with the Smart House systems.

Specialists, who have great experience at industrial enterprises, are involved into teaching process at the Department. It allows us to implement new engineering and technological achievements in education course.
