The Acoustics of Entertainment Enterprises and Studios, Electro Acoustics Programme

Acoustics is a very wide area of ​​knowledge devoted to the study of mechanical vibrations in various environments. And this is music and speech, the singing of birds and the roar of a car, the sound of a waterfall and the rustle of leaves, conversation or the noise of a neighbor behind a wall. All this - the audible sounds that adorn or complicate our lives. Their radiation and reception, use or, on the contrary, elimination - these are the tasks that are solved by such disciplines as “Theoretical Foundations of Acoustics”, “Electro-acoustics”, “Architectural Acoustics”, “Acoustic Basics of Room Sounding and Sound Quality”, “Musical Acoustics” "," Acoustic measurements " and many others.

Students gain professional knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Electro Acoustic Equipment Design;

• Public-address Amplifier Design;

• Sound Engineer Equipment;

• Room Acoustic Treatment and Correction (Acoustic Absorption, Vibro- and Sound Insulation); 

• Acoustic Measurements;

• Working with the Program Software for Acoustic Design (EASE ODEON, etc.)

Students are involved actively for the scientific and applied works implementation (including work on a commercial basis). Among the recent projects of the Department are the acoustic design of the rehearsal hall in the Mikhailovsky Theatre, Capella, acoustic equipment installation of the second stage in the Maryinsky Theatre, acoustic treatment of the Aquarium Band rehearsal studio, various studios design, audition rooms and so on.

Graduates work at:

- public and private project companies (the Krylov State Research Center, the Morphyspribor Research Institute, the Rubin Central Design Bureau, the ACOUSTIC GROUP, etc.);

- electro-acoustic equipment and microphones production (the Microphone-SPb) and loudspeakers (the Akton, the SBN, the Meta);

-  sound recording studios, acoustic design companies for concert halls and venues;

-  intelligence agency technical departments and other organizations.

The Sound Technologies of Film and Television 

Sound technologies are a sphere of both operational and creative activity of a person. Our University took the most active part in the appearance, formation and development of sound cinema, in researching the principles of recording and reproducing sound in cinema. Modern living conditions force each of us to actively use interactive communication and communication technologies. The image in the movies and on television gives you the opportunity to feel the charm and originality of the situation and events. BUT! How much stronger sensations, if all this is accompanied by sounds! The heart beats faster, tears roll over my eyes ... And how we all don’t like it if the sound is distorted, and the movie watched was duplicated by people far from understanding the sound quality! How nice it is if the sound of your favorite work volume and reverently conveys all the subtleties of the performed themes. From working live on television and radio to professional work in hardware rewriting of film studios is the field of work of our graduates. The knowledge gained in this area makes it possible to carry out not only professional activities, but also the ability to form your own studio for editing images and sounding films of own production.

The laboratory and technical base of the faculty is as close as possible to the actual conditions of the complexes of sound equipment for the primary recording of sound, editing and rewriting of professional audiovisual programs. Technical means and content of training programs are constantly being improved. As an additional help to students, interactive technologies of counseling on educational tasks being carried out, as well as on issues of vocational training, are used. The leading specialists of film and television enterprises of St. Petersburg who are graduates of the University from different years participate in the teaching work.

   The properties of a modern cinema are digital technologies that allow you to receive stereo images with multichannel high quality sound. Therefore, a modern specialist in the technology of on-screen spectacles and film enterprises is, first of all, a professional in the field of computer technologies intended for demonstration of films, both in traditional cinemas and in entertainment rooms.
